ARTHUR LOCK RETIRES AFTER 43 YEARS AT WRIGHT'S
06 August 2000 00:00

G.R. Wright & Sons Ltd, flour millers at Ponders End Mills since 1867 wished their long serving employee, Arthur Lock a very happy retirement when he left on 4th August 2000.
Arthur started work at the mill in 1957 and, over the years has had many varied duties. Originally he started on a posser - now an obsolete machine - packed flour in hessian sacks tied with string that, in those days, weighed 140lb (64kg). Today, Wright's pack flour up to 32kg. Arthur also worked on the old geyser mixer creating fish bait and had to work with red ochre and caramels.
Arthur has been a great example to everyone at Wright's, always cheerful with an exemplary work record. Arthur had a few problems with driving fork lifts trucks and on one occasion unfortunately, drove into Mr. Kenneth Wright's brand new Mercedes!
After a special presentation by Directors and staff, Arthur was driven out of the mill in a Rolls Royce to continue celebrations.
