British Sandwich Week 8th – 14th May

07 May 2016

It's British Sandwich Week 8th – 14th May so let’s celebrate our best loved fast food this week! The Great British sandwich!  It is thought that this was 'invented' by the 4th Earl of Sandwich who was a keen gambler and didn't like to leave the gaming table - so rather than breaking for dinner while the game was in full swing, he asked that he was brought some meat between two slices of bread - and this was the birth of a sandwich.

God's gift to leftovers which can become a satisfying meal when layered in some soft, flat home-made bread, such as Wright’s Ciabatta or Garlic & Rosemary Focaccia and drizzled with a bit of salad dressing or chutney. They can be a main attraction to any lunch box and good for dinner on any of those no-time-to-cook- coz-its-too-hot nights!  Any leftovers from Sunday's chicken roast can be a Monday’s Coronation Chicken Ciabatta’s and perhaps Tuesday's chilli-chicken in Premium White Rolls

Britain's favourite food to go holds a large slice of the food industry with 300,000 owing their livelyhood to it. We consume 11.5 billion sandwiches each year. If you laid each one end to end, they would go around the world about 44 times and we have paid over £7 billion – averaging £2.07 per sandwich.  Looking at the stats, it was nice to know that more than half of these were made and eaten in the home – hopefully on Wright good home made bread!
